At the beginning of December this year, the Presidium of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LMA) elected new members to the Young Academy from among 32 candidates. Among them is Dr. Augustinas Baušys, a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University (VU MF), who was chosen to represent the Biology, Medicine, and Geosciences Division.

Dr. Augustinas Baušys is a practicing abdominal surgeon, an active researcher, and the head of the Experimental Surgery and Oncology Laboratory at the Institute of Translational Health Research at VU's Faculty of Medicine. He conducts preclinical and clinical studies with a common primary goal: to develop innovative methods that can improve surgical outcomes for gastrointestinal diseases. One of his most significant studies focused on developing a personalized preoperative rehabilitation methodology and evaluating its effectiveness. This new patient preparation method reduced postoperative complications by more than 50% following surgeries for stomach cancer. Another critical ongoing clinical study aims to assess the effectiveness of combining high-pressure intraperitoneal chemotherapy with systemic chemotherapy in treating stomach cancer that has spread within the peritoneum.

The scientist has carried out numerous nationally and internationally significant studies, participates in various projects, and has published over 40 articles in international scientific journals, including the prestigious British Journal of Surgery.

Congratulations to Dr. Augustinas Baušys on this well-deserved recognition!
