From June 5-9, 2024, the Medimeisterschaften festival took place in Germany, as it does every year. This annual event is a large-scale sports festival that brings together over 25,000 medical students from various universities. Each institution showcases a song, a music video, and teams for football, basketball, handball, volleyball, and cheerleading.
This year, Vilnius University, represented by its Orga team from the Faculty of Medicine, made a remarkable impression with two songs that garnered over 40,000 listens, alongside a creative music video. In addition, the university fielded teams for soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Together with other non-German universities, Vilnius was part of the "Ostblock," a collective that put together one of the festival's most impressive stages, which was later voted the best.

“Over the past year, we’ve cultivated an incredible community in Vilnius, resulting in an enthusiastic fanbase that left a strong impression on other universities. Despite being a small group of just 100 people—compared to other universities that bring thousands—we made a significant impact. Our temporary tattoos and costumes were a hit, with 500 tattoos distributed, helping to spread the word about Vilnius University,” shared Luis Leon Gunter, a member of the Orga team.
The festival kicked off on Thursday with a vibrant parade of flags and costumes, followed by musical performances that lasted until 1 AM. Friday was action-packed, featuring basketball and volleyball matches. Although the Orga team didn’t compete in cheerleading this year, members expressed hope to participate next year with more support. Saturday’s main event was soccer, and the Orga fanbase rallied passionately to support their teams on the field.

“Saturday night was a highlight, as a DJ from our university performed on the Ostblock stage in front of over 3,000 students, receiving enthusiastic feedback. Our contribution extended beyond just the DJ—our stage presence was substantial. Our Homebase featured banners, a tent that accommodated more than 70 people, and games that attracted participants from other universities, quickly establishing it as the best camping spot at the festival,” Luis Leon Gunter explained.
According to the Orga team, it is astonishing to think that all of this was achieved without any sponsors. “We are incredibly proud of the impact we made and how we represented our university. Looking ahead to next year, we’re considering a collaboration with a prominent German university to enhance sustainability, broaden our fanbase, and add a cheerleading team. The University of Essen, in particular, was impressed with our organization and may partner with us. We extend our gratitude to Vilnius University for its support and look forward to achieving even more next year,” Luis Leon Gunter concluded.
