26th April is an International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.
34 years have passed, and another disaster is making us anxious again. Currently we are under a very special situation and we realize how fragile but also extremely strong can a person be. Such are our doctors today, such are the survivors of the Chernobyl Disaster … THANK YOU!
Researchers of the Department of Human and Medical Genetics, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Vilnius University, in cooperation with „The Lithuanian Chernobyl Movement“, seek to identify the characteristics of genome variation in Lithuanian Chernobyl liquidators in the context of adaptive evolutionary mechanisms and run a project:
ADAPTATIVE GENETIC MECHANISMS - A LARGE GENOME INVESTIGATION OF LITHUANIAN CHERNOBYL DISASTER LIQUIDATORS
Such studies help to understand the links between evolutionary selection and disease in order to find the reasons why each person and population has a different propensity for certain diseases, survival, and longevity.
