On May 17, 2023, the 76th conference of the Student Research Network (SRN) of the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine (VU MF) took place. Students from various scientific groups within VU MF, along with the faculty's researchers, presented their research projects, interesting clinical cases, and the results of their analyses. The week-long event culminated in a plenary conference where winners from 23 SRN sections delivered their presentations.

The event was opened with a welcoming speech by the VU MF Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, Assoc. Prof. Karolis Ažukaitis. “Science is not an additional activity in medicine; it is an integral part of it. The main skill we use in medicine is clinical decision-making, and the tools we use to make those decisions—diagnosis, treatment, and more—are all based on science. Science underpins our daily work, the policies we inform, and, undoubtedly, the innovations that are increasingly emerging. The Student Research Network is a starting yet very important platform where you get your first experience in science. The path of science is full of opportunities for young people to explore the world, meet inspiring individuals, grow in their careers, and contribute to change,” shared Assoc. Prof. K. Ažukaitis about the importance of SMVT.

The Vice Dean also expressed joy that the Faculty of Medicine's Science Center will be opened this year. “With the opening of the Science Center, we are entering a new era—new laboratories, new opportunities. However, it is crucial that we, as medical professionals, engage in translational science. This is science focused on applicability and problem-solving. Most of you will become doctors, pharmacists, or specialists in other fields, but this does not prevent you from also pursuing and investing in science,” stated Assoc. Prof. K. Ažukaitis.
Odeta Vitkūnienė, Director of the Personal Health Department of the Ministry of Health, attended the event to congratulate the winning students and present awards. “You are the community that may contribute to shaping health policy in the future. The Ministry of Health was invited to participate and see what students are working on. We were surprised to see so many young people involved in the Student Research Network, tackling so many challenges they want to overcome, analyze, and solve. We found no topic irrelevant to the Ministry of Health. You all deserve to be called winners,” said O. Vitkūnienė. She awarded prizes to the authors of theses contributing to science-based health policy formation:
- Agnė Zbarauskaitė (4th year) for her work “Skirtingos specializacijų specialistų, prižiūrinčių socialiai pažeidžiamas grupes, žinios apie burnos ligų profilaktiką”;
- Ugnė Lokytė (2nd year) for her work “Patyčių ir mobingo ligoninėse paplitimo ir prevencijos analizė”;
- Ivona Anisimova (5th year) for her work “Vaistininko vaidmuo osteoporozės prevencijai”.

The authors of the most innovative theses were congratulated and awarded by Lilita Liaudanskaitė, a representative of the Innovation Agency Lithuania. “Together with my colleagues from the Innovation Agency, we are pleased to see the qualitative and quantitative progress of the Student Research Network since 2022, when we began collaborating with the VU Faculty of Medicine within the framework of this competition. This demonstrates the enthusiasm of young people, their desire to improve, and their efforts to tackle challenges and solve problems in the public health sector. Challenges always spur the generation of new scientific ideas and give impetus to their commercialization,” said L. Liaudanskaitė. Prizes for the most innovative scientific theses were awarded to:
- Vėtra Kentraitė (4th year) for her work “Preeklampsija: kodėl paplitimas ir komplikacijų dažnis išlieka nekintantis?”;
- David Petrosian (4th year) for his work “Dirbtinio intelekto valdomas mašininio mokymosi modelis, prognozuojantis telemedicinos tinkamumą migrena sergantiems pacientams”;
- Agata Bruzgul (4th year) and Mindaugas Smetaninas (2nd year) for their work “Egzosomų fiziologinės funkcijos, vaidmuo rezistentiškumo chemoterapijai vystymesi ir perspektyvos praktikoje.”

The SMVT operates on a free membership basis, bringing together undergraduate, integrated, and master's students, researchers from the faculty, and all those interested in and wishing to participate in the faculty's scientific activities. Over 300 students from undergraduate, integrated, and master's programs participate in the SMVT conference each year, presenting 300-400 different research projects, which are later published in the SMVT conference thesis publication. Together with their instructors, students have established 48 SMVT circles, 34 of which are active in different VU MF departments this year. The list of active circles is available online.
