Prof Dr Eugenijus Gefenas represents Faculty of Medicine (MF) of Vilnius University (VU) at the World Health Organization (WHO) working group for the development of  a WHO tool for benchmarking of research ethics oversight.

The jointly developed WHO benchmark for research ethics oversight is expected to ensure respect for the principles of academic integrity, and protect the interests of research participants and researchers. The development of the research ethics assessment procedure will also become an indicator of the quality of research, addressing the problems and challenges of the reliability, integrity, completeness, management of the collected data.

The ethical and scientific standards for conducting biomedical research on human participants have been established in such international guidelines, as the Declaration of Helsinki, the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects, as well as in recent documents developed by the World Health Organization.  Compliance with the mentioned guidelines is crucial to ensure that the protection of the rights and well-being of research participants is promoted and that the results of the investigations are credible.
